Ocean For Prosperity - KPP Lautra

The "Oceans for Prosperity" (LAUTRA) project is a collaborative Indonesian government and World Bank initiative to improve marine ecosystem health and support coastal communities. It aims to achieve this by enhancing the management of marine protected areas and coral reef fisheries, while simultaneously creating new economic opportunities for local populations. Key components include strengthening institutional capacity, investing in infrastructure for coastal livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable financing for conservation efforts.

Project goals and components

• Improve marine protected area (MPA) management: Support the effective management of MPAs to protect biodiversity, enhance ecosystem services, and support sustainable fisheries.

• Strengthen fisheries management: Enhance monitoring and management systems for coral reef fisheries, particularly in overfished areas, and strengthen the institutions that manage them.

• Boost coastal community livelihoods: Promote economic growth in coastal communities through investments in infrastructure, skills development, and access to finance.

• Develop sustainable financing: Create mechanisms for a long-term, sustainable flow of financing for both MPA management and coastal community development.

Implementing bodies and funding

• Implementing bodies: The project is a collaboration between the Indonesian government, specifically the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas).

• Funding: The project is supported by a total of $210 million from the World Bank, including grants from the PROBLUE Multi-Donor Trust Fund and the Government of Canada through the Indonesia Oceans, Marine Debris and Coastal Resources Multi-Donor Trust Fund (Oceans MDTF).

• It has a specific focus on key areas such as the Sawu Sea and the Alor-Pantar Strait.
